Delta

Confluence ParkDelta is the largest community in the county and the county seat, home to around 9,000 residents. (The whole county has a population of approximately 31,000.) Delta sits at an elevation of 4,980 feet. Delta is a rural community, but it’s not so small that you have to go out of town to obtain the “necessities of life”. Delta County is noted for its wonderful and affordable housing, climate, health care, personal safety, economics and recreation; it is home to the only Wal-Mart and hospital in the county.

Housing in Delta, as well as anywhere in Delta County, is as diverse as the lay of the land. You will find early turn of the century homes, many of which are listed on the local historic register, planned developments with neighborhood open-space parks, smaller acreage ranchettes and larger agricultural farms and homesteads.

Confluence Park in downtown Delta, near the confluence of the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers, offers a 60-acre lake that attracts birds year-round, and almost 5 miles of meandering walking and bicycle trails. Bill Heddles Recreation Center, located at Confluence Park, offers a variety of programs for all age groups. You’ll also find Sweitzer Lake State Park and several municipal parks, along with Devil’s Thumb Golf Club, a premiere 18-hole golf course, all located in Delta.

The climate is exceptional with warm summer temperatures, usually in the 90’s. Autumn is crowned with beautiful colors that lead into our “Banana Belt” winter, with daytime temperatures averaging in the high 20s to low 40s with the overnight lows rarely below 0 degrees. If you enjoy the snow, Grand Mesa is just a short distance to the north.

Delta is a gateway community for the rest of the county, with Grand Junction about 42 miles to the north and Montrose 21 miles south, both of which have airports. The lower elevation means milder winters, and a growing season that lasts a little longer. Some of the county’s largest employers are in Delta, and the surrounding residential areas rub elbows with the agricultural operations on the surrounding mesas.
